The Women of Hope exist to equip women through the word God, to be fit for the master’s use spiritually, emotionally, financially, and physically.

On March 26, 2003, Rev. H. F. Shepherd retired as pastor and The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church (The House of Hope Atlanta) began its search for a new pastor. A pulpit committee was formed and commenced an eight-month search for a new pastor. In November 2003, God sent a Spirit-filled man in the person of Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., and on December 21, 2003, he was installed as the 22nd pastor of the church. Under Dr. Smith’s leadership, the church has grown phenomenally in membership, attendance and finances. By Dr. Smith’s fifth year as pastor, the membership had more than quadrupled.

Sam Stinson, The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church was formed in 1876 by a Sunday school and prayer meeting group. Rev. William Tillman (Father Tillman), pastor of Wheat Street Baptist Church, organized the church in May 1876. This ministry provides worship and ministry services to local nursing homes. Promoting and fostering an environment for men to experience spiritual and personal growth through biblical teaching, mentoring, fellowshipping, and experiential living to live a better life.

The church, located in the metro Atlanta area, welcomes people to come and worship God, share the message of Jesus Christ with others, and work together to carry out the mission of the Kingdom of God with excellence. The Deacons provide service to the church through spiritual leadership and care for the disadvantaged in the congregation. They provide service to the sick and shut-in and give support to the Pastor as he directs. The Hospitality Ministry greets and welcomes members and visitors in order to create a warm and friendly environment to those who enter the church for service or events. This ministry also provides support for guest speakers, recording artists, and assists during funeral & repast services.

The Mothers Ministry serves our congregation by providing support during ordinance activities within the ministry. Life University provides believers with a safe space to connect, learn, share and grow within small groups. HOPE Kids is here to introduce children of all ages to Jesus Christ and to help them grow in a relationship with Him. The Prayer Ministry is a continual, effectual, fervent prayer organization that intercedes for our Pastor, his family, church leadership, and the congregation. We also intercedes on behalf of those who request prayer, our communities, cities, countries, and the entire world.

The Deacon Wives provide support to the ministry in supporting their husbands as they work various assignments in the ministry. Leading members on an intentional discipleship path of life in spiritual discipline and formation through various forms of ministry for living a better and healthier life to glorify God. Our ministry creates opportunities and training to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who are lost. This ministry collaborates with the Outreach and Ministers to connect with those who do not have a relationship with Christ.
Smith has always had a passion to redress those things that plague the community and burden the people he serves. Throughout his ministry he has been heavily involved in prison reform, re-entry programs, human services and community development. In 2013, Dr. Smith launched The Tabitha’s House, a non-profit organization that provides housing, counseling and support to young girls rescued from human trafficking. In addition, Smith opened The Haven House, a fully staffed, professional and licensed counseling center that addresses the emotional and mental health concerns of people in the community.
The Finance Ministry is designed to help individuals, families, businesses, and the church become financially successful God’s way. The Finance ministry creates partnerships, provides technology, counseling, and education. As its name suggests, The House of Hope Atlanta offers hope to those desiring respite from the trials and tribulations of life and guidance to those earnestly seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. The church welcomes those in metro Atlanta and beyond to worship God, share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others and execute the business of the Kingdom with excellence.
God has highly favored Dr. Smith by allowing explosive growth and outreach to accompany his ministry. Rev. Hubert Floyd Shepherd was extended the call to pastor the church in 1957. The church’s membership flourished in the Edgewood community of Atlanta, Ga. so much so that December 1973 the ministry moved from 119 Mayson Avenue to 2589 Tilson Road, Decatur, Ga. The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church continued to grow and on Sunday, March 20, 1994, a ground breaking service was held to mark the start of construction on a new building. Two years later, on Sunday, September 29, 1996, the church relocated and dedicated its $8 million, 2,200-seat sanctuary at 2600 Whites Mill East (later renamed H.F. Shepherd Drive) in Decatur, Ga.
