Our ministry provides care and support to those who are ill and/or bereaved throughout our church family. We are a ministry that reaches out to those who are disadvantaged in the community. One of the few mentions came from Kelly O’Donnell, president of the correspondents’ association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel's 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza.

Favored Dr. Smith by allowing explosive growth and outreach to accompany his ministry. Under his leadership, The House of Hope Atlanta was blessed to purchase a 60 acre, 6 building campus, featuring a 7,000 seat Cathedral. The Ushers Ministry welcomes guests and members and regularly participates in worship services by assisting with literature distribution, directing and seating guests, and collecting offerings. To get inside Saturday's dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Once an individual's gifts have been determined, they are placed on a customized pathway that is tailored to their specific gifts and goals. Under the leadership of the first pastor, Rev. Sam Stinson, The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church was formed in 1876 by a Sunday school and prayer meeting group. Rev. William Tillman (Father Tillman), pastor of Wheat Street Baptist Church, organized the church in May 1876. This ministry provides worship and ministry services to local nursing homes. Promoting and fostering an environment for men to experience spiritual and personal growth through biblical teaching, mentoring, fellowshipping, and experiential living to live a better life.

In 2009, the church purchased and relocated to a 60 acre, 7 building campus, that features a 7,000 seat Neo-Gothic cathedral. Additionally, a myriad of capital improvements, enhancements and investments in the community have been made. With this acquisition, the church is well-positioned for expansion and Kingdom building opportunities. Dr. E. Dewey Smith is the Senior Pastor/Teacher of The House of Hope Atlanta, Macon and West Pointe – one church in three locations – with a membership roll of more than 10,000. A proud native of Macon, Ga., he has been a minister of the gospel for over 30 years. He commenced his preaching ministry at age 17 and his pastoral ministry at 19.
In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O’Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. Families of both men were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners. This ministry provides visitation services to those who are incarcerated. We also provide support to those who are adversely affected by having a loved one incarcerated.
On March 26, 2003, Rev. H. F. Shepherd retired as pastor and The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church (The House of Hope Atlanta) began its search for a new pastor. A pulpit committee was formed and commenced an eight-month search for a new pastor. In November 2003, God sent a Spirit-filled man in the person of Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., and on December 21, 2003, he was installed as the 22nd pastor of the church. Under Dr. Smith’s leadership, the church has grown phenomenally in membership, attendance and finances. By Dr. Smith’s fifth year as pastor, the membership had more than quadrupled.

The Finance Ministry is designed to help individuals, families, businesses, and the church become financially successful God’s way. The Finance ministry creates partnerships, provides technology, counseling, and education. As its name suggests, The House of Hope Atlanta offers hope to those desiring respite from the trials and tribulations of life and guidance to those earnestly seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. The church welcomes those in metro Atlanta and beyond to worship God, share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others and execute the business of the Kingdom with excellence.

Smith has always had a passion to redress those things that plague the community and burden the people he serves. Throughout his ministry he has been heavily involved in prison reform, re-entry programs, human services and community development. The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church continued to grow and on Sunday, March 20, 1994, a ground breaking service was held to mark the start of construction on a new building.
